We realize we are not the only law firm professing to offer challenging work, professional development, and a collegial environment.  Beyond the apparent similarities lies what truly defines a firm—the professional and personal experience it offers.

O'Melveny's summer program in our Asia offices is very similar to the program in our US offices, with the added benefit of exposure to practicing in an emerging market. The program provides those considering a career in law with a realistic view of what it is actually like to practice, and most importantly, what it is like to practice at O’Melveny in an international arena. Students participating in our Asia summer program will spend at least the first five weeks of the summer in one of our US offices, followed by five weeks in an Asia office. Although we do not expect to hire first-year associates to be resident in our Asia offices, the experiences gained will provide a solid foundation to students with an international mindset who go on to practice in an O’Melveny office in the United States.

Interviewing

  • On campus interviewing: Students who wish to work in any of our Asia offices must interview on two interview schedules during OCI, one schedule representing our Asia offices and the other representing one of our U.S. offices. For example, if you interview on the Asia office schedule, youll also need to interview on the Washington, DC office schedule.
  • Callbacks: In order to be considered for the Asia practice, you'll need to receive callback invitations from both of the offices you met with on campus. For example, both the Asia office and the Washington, DC office must invite you for callback interviews. During the callback interview, you will meet with five to six attorneys in the U.S. office and then interview with several attorneys from the Asia office via videoconference.  In some cases, you may receive an offer to interview with only a U.S. office, and we hope you'll accept that invitation.
  • Summer Program Offers: Similar to callback invitations, both offices must extend offers for a summer associate position for you to join the Asia summer program.
  • Splits with other firms: In order for you to spend at least five full weeks in both the U.S. and Asia, we discourage you from splitting your summer with another firm.

Summer Program Information

  • Compensation: Our 2009 summer associates will be paid $3,100 per week.
  • Commitment: We require you to spend five weeks at the beginning of your summer in one of our U.S. offices followed by five weeks in one of our Asia offices.
  • Training: Each office plans training programs to expose summer associates to the fundamentals of legal practice as well as programs designed to familiarize them with firm life. Summer associates are also invited to attend most of the training programs offered to our attorneys. The Asia Summer Program offers a unique experience for law students who wish to learn more about practicing law in Asia.
  • Social events: Attorneys at O’Melveny enjoy getting to know the summer associates and want the summer associates to get to know them as well. We plan social events during your summer so that you can learn more about your colleagues and build strong working relationships.
  • Travel and Living Expenses: O’Melveny will pay for your travel expenses to and from the Asia office. We will also assist you in finding housing. As in all of our offices, living expenses will not be reimbursed.
  • Associate Offers: Offers to join an Asia office will be based on the office’s need. It is rare for any of the Asia offices to hire a first-year associate. However, working in an Asia office can greatly increase a student’s likelihood of working in an international legal environment later in their career.

O'Melveny partner Victor Jih teamed with his sister Tammy to win "The Amazing Race," the CBS-TV reality show. The Jihs were revealed as the winners during the show's season finale on Sunday, May 10 and shared a US$1 million prize.
