Adam KohSweeney co-authored the article, "Hiring? Laying Off? What You Must Know Now," published in the October 8 edition of
Business Week. The authors suggest that while many employers are properly concerned about today's big-picture labor initiatives, they would also benefit from focusing on some key issues closer to home involving staffing decisions that are more within their control.
Virjee and KohSweeney discuss three considerations employers may be missing as they lay off or rehire employees: disparate impact; wage-and-hour issues; and the importance of the "human touch." By keeping these issues in mind, treating employees with respect and civility, being flexible, and meeting employees halfway where possible (even when not strictly required), employers may be able to head off major issues before they surface.
