American Bar Association: Our Curious Amalgam: “What’s on the Radar? Legal and Regulatory Analysis of Airline Mergers in the US”

November 18, 2024

O’Melveny partner Courtney Dyer was featured on an episode of the American Bar Association’s Our Curious Amalgam podcast to discuss the legal and regulatory reviews of airline mergers. “The industry structure is what it is. With the four larger carriers (American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines), it makes it more difficult for smaller carriers like Alaska, Hawaiian and even JetBlue and Spirit from growing organically on their own,” Dyer said. “Why it is important for these smaller carriers to get the opportunities to grow through acquisition is to be able to offer customers convenience and utility, meaning they can fly their guests to more places they want to go at the times they want to fly. This captures additional revenues for these airlines that they can funnel into organic growth, but it also allows them to acquire loyalty from guests that will fly with them time and time again.”
