Butwin Receives Fordham Law Review’s Leonard F. Manning Achievement Award

NEW YORK—April 26, 2019—O’Melveny Chair Bradley J. Butwin has been awarded the Fordham Law Review’s Leonard F. Manning Achievement Award. The prestigious award honors alumni for their professional achievements in the tradition of Leonard F. Manning, a Fordham Law professor and adviser to the Fordham Law Review for nearly three decades. Past honorees include several federal judges and other leaders of the profession.

“Brad is not only an excellent lawyer, but he’s also an excellent leader in the legal community,” said Rita Glavin, president of the Fordham Law Review Alumni Association, who presented Butwin with the award. She noted that during Butwin’s tenure as chair O’Melveny has consistently earned high marks for its culture, and diversity and inclusion efforts, which she described as hallmarks of a firm that delivers great client service.

Butwin was presented with the award at the Fordham Law Review Alumni Association’s Annual Reception and Dinner, held earlier this month at the Yale Club in New York. Colleagues, alumni, family, and friends attended the event.

Butwin said he was humbled to receive the honor.

“Looking at the Leonard Manning award’s history and past winners,” he said, “it’s clear that I follow in the footsteps of some of Fordham Law School’s true legends—those who have made a real and lasting impact to the Law School and to the Fordham Law Review over many years.”

Butwin, who graduated from Fordham University School of Law in 1985, served as one of the Law Review’s Commentary Editors. He maintains strong ties to the school, serving as Chair of the school’s fundraising campaign and as a member of the Dean’s Planning Council. In addition, three of his four children attend Fordham. Last year he was awarded Fordham Law’s Medal of Achievement, the highest honor bestowed by the Fordham Law Alumni Association, in recognition of his contributions to the school and his outstanding achievement in the law.

Butwin called the award a “poignant reminder” of the major role the Law Review played in his life.

“It is not an exaggeration to say that my time on the Fordham Law Review was the single most important and rewarding educational experience of my life,” Butwin said.

He added that what he appreciates most are the bonds he made with other Law Review members: “Together, we tackled the enormous challenge of running a top academic journal and consistently presenting top-notch work product. And in so doing, we forged lifelong friendships that have meant so much to me.”

Throughout Butwin’s time as chair of O’Melveny, the firm has regularly ranked in the top tier of The American Lawyer’s “A-List,” which recognizes the nation’s most “well-rounded” firms in the areas of revenue per lawyer, pro bono commitment, diversity representation, and associate satisfaction. O’Melveny has also been a perennial honoree in The American Lawyer’s “Litigation Department of the Year” competition, and in Vault’s 2019 Law Firm Rankings, the firm was recognized as the “Best Firm to Work For.”
