FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LOS ANGELES—July 19, 2018—The Los Angeles Daily Journal named O’Melveny partners Eric Amdursky, Apalla Chopra, and Robert Siegel to its list of the Top Labor & Employment Lawyers for 2018.
In its profile of Amdursky, the managing partner of O’Melveny’s Silicon Valley office, the Daily Journal cited his work for such clients as Starz Entertainment LLC, Broadcom Inc. (formerly Avago Technologies Ltd.), TuneCore Inc., Zynga Inc., Agendia Inc. and Coldwell Banker, Residential Brokerage Co. The publication highlighted Amdursky's work in a recent Broadcom case that, as the Daily Journal reported, “required Amdursky to delve deeply into the interplay of four countries’ laws. As a result, he prevailed for his client on summary judgment against claims seeking $70 million in damages for an unfair dismissal allegation by Kong Beng Saw, the former general manager for San Jose-based Avago Technologies’ Malaysia unit.” As Amdursky told the Daily Journal, there’s “never a dull moment.”
The Daily Journal recognized Chopra, chair of O’Melveny’s labor and employment practice, for her role as “one of the go-to lawyers nationally for investigating and handling litigation regarding how universities address sexual assault allegations under Title IX.” The publication pointed to her recent win for Harvard University in a high-profile lawsuit over the University’s handling of such allegations. It also cited her success for Claremont McKenna College in a case involving a former student seeking to compel the College to set aside his suspension after having been found responsible for violating the College’s sexual misconduct policy. Chopra told the Daily Journal that the #MeToo movement has drawn more attention to her Title IX work. “Throughout the years I have been handling this work, I have always focused on crafting legal defenses that are not only likely to result in a successful outcome, but also that are consistent with my clients’ practical needs and values,” she said.
Siegel, the Daily Journal observed, “advises virtually all the major U.S. airlines on their union issues and has been involved in nearly every major airline merger in the past three decades, including Alaska Airlines Inc.’s $2.6 billion acquisition of Virgin America in 2016.” The publication noted Siegel’s strong outcome for client Alaska Air Group Inc., the airline’s parent, “in a 2017 arbitration that established the first joint pilot collective bargaining agreement following the merger.” It also cited his recent wins for Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings Inc. and subsidiary Southern Air Inc. in the arbitration of collective bargaining agreements and Atlas Air in a legal battle against the International Brotherhood of Teamsters over pilot slowdowns. “The slowdown issue is important for the airline industry, because it does happen,” Siegel said. “This case involved an important principle.”
