O’Melveny Chair Bradley J. Butwin to Receive American Jewish Committee’s 2021 Judge Learned Hand Award
November 4, 2021
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEW YORK—November 4, 2021—American Jewish Committee has selected O’Melveny Chair Bradley J. Butwin to receive its 2021 Judge Learned Hand Award in recognition of his outstanding leadership in the legal profession and in the community.
American Jewish Committee will honor Butwin on November 4 in an online tribute.
American Jewish Committee established the award in 1964 in memory of Learned Hand, a federal judge and giant of the legal profession who, in more than five decades on the bench, set a standard for judicial excellence and the defense of civil liberties. American Jewish Committee presents the award annually to a distinguished attorney who emulates Judge Hand’s ideals of justice, while working to safeguard democratic values and constitutional rights.
Reflecting on this recognition, Butwin said, “I am deeply honored to receive this important award—and I do so on behalf of O’Melveny and everything our wonderful firm stands for. At O’Melveny, we have a deep and enduring commitment to fighting for equal justice. It’s an innate part of who we are.”
Butwin rose to the challenges of 2020 and 2021 by cofounding the Law Firm Antiracism Alliance—which has united almost 300 firms in the fight against structural racism in the law—and by serving on its Board of Advisors. He is also an active member on the boards of other public-spirited organizations: the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity, which promotes a more open and diverse legal profession; Only Make Believe, a nonprofit that creates and performs interactive theater for children in hospitals and care facilities; and the Legal Aid Society. In an effort to bring affordable legal representation to underserved communities, Butwin cofounded the Court Square Law Project, an innovative public-private collaboration that paired recent law school graduates with clients of modest means.
A longtime supporter of Fordham Law School, Butwin also served as the Chair of the school’s Financial Aid Campaign and is a member of the Dean’s Planning Council. In recognition of his outstanding accomplishments, the Fordham Law Alumni Association awarded Butwin its Medal of Achievement, the association’s highest honor, and the Fordham Law Review Alumni Association chose Butwin to receive its Leonard F. Manning Achievement Award.
For his dedication to justice, Butwin received the Human Relations Award from the New York Lawyers Division of the Anti-Defamation League, and the New York City Bar Association presented him with its Thurgood Marshall Award for his role in freeing a wrongly convicted man from Georgia’s death row.
In addition to his leadership roles outside the firm, Butwin maintains an active practice. Chambers USA ranks him among the top securities litigators in the nation and has rated him as one of the leading commercial litigators in New York.
Butwin also presides over a firm with an award-winning pro bono program. O’Melveny regularly takes on the most pressing issues of the day, including immigration, housing, women’s rights, foster care, education, veterans affairs, racial justice, criminal justice reform, and voting rights.
