O’Melveny Partner Daniel Petrocelli Named a “Legal Legend” by The Hollywood Reporter

April 24, 2023

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CENTURY CITY—April 24, 2023—O’Melveny partner and Trial Practice chair Daniel Petrocelli has been named to The Hollywood Reporter’s list of “Legal Legends,” a supplemental special feature of the publication’s annual “Power Lawyers” list that “honors entertainment attorneys whose career achievements and contributions to the industry are extraordinary.”

Each year, The Hollywood Reporter inducts a new group of attorneys to its “Legal Legends” list, and those selected retain the title for life.

The Hollywood Reporter lauded Petrocelli, who serves as a vice chair of O’Melveny, for his work in an array of headline-making cases throughout his career, including representing:

  • the father of Ronald Goldman in a successful civil suit against O.J. Simpson;
  • Enron CEO Jeffrey Skilling against fraud and insider trading charges;
  • Warner Bros. in defending rights to the Superman franchise;
  • Disney in defending rights to the Winnie the Pooh franchise;
  • Marvel in defending rights to iconic Marvel characters;
  • Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Kesha in defending claims by producer she accused of sexual misconduct;
  • Sirius XM in claims regarding public performance rights to sound recordings;
  • Global Music Rights in antitrust litigation regarding performance rights organizations;

The Hollywood Reporter also recognized Petrocelli’s representation of AT&T and Time Warner to defend the companies’ historic US$85.4 billion merger against the US Department of Justice’s lawsuit to block the merger. Arguing that the government’s theory ignored “meaningful real-world evidence,” Petrocelli convinced the judge overseeing the case that the merger would benefit consumers and competition in the media industry.

“I’ve litigated just about every kind of significant area: trademarks, securities, mass tort, criminal, insurance, construction, patent, antitrust, and pretty much any kind of entertainment case,” Petrocelli said. “I’ve always eschewed the ‘Hollywood lawyer’ moniker because I never wanted to be branded as such. I always wanted to be considered a lawyer and litigator of all types.” He noted that arguing a case before the US Supreme Court is the last item on his legal bucket list.

Petrocelli’s full “Legal Legends” profile can be found here.
