Global Competition Review: China Conditionally Clears Optical Device Maker’s Acquisition of Laser Company

China’s State Administration for Market Regulation has cleared II-VI’s proposed acquisition of Coherent. Both II-VI, a vertically-integrated manufacturer that develops optical components, and Coherent, a provider of lasers and laser-based technology for scientific, commercial, and industrial customers, agreed to continue providing various products to Chinese consumers based on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms. The US$7 billion acquisition was announced in March 2021. Philip Monaghan, Lining Shan, and Vivian Wang of O’Melveny & Myers LLP are legal counsel to II-VI.
