Reuters: In Landmark Ruling, South Korea's Top Court Confirms State Benefits for Gay Couples

In a significant milestone for the advancement of LGBTQ+ rights in South Korea, the Supreme Court upheld a ruling that same-sex couples are eligible for spousal benefits from the National Health Insurance Service. The Court found that though there are no clauses in the National Insurance Act that specifically refer to same-sex unions, denying a couple benefits constitutes discrimination based on sexual orientation. O’Melveny’s Young Shin, Woojae Kim, Hae-in Park, Celia Kim, Christian Peeters, Katharina Weiss, Sevda Staykova, Aoife Fahy, Philip Monaghan, Kieran Humphrey, and Aditya Kurian helped pro bono clients the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Associations (ILGA World and IGLA Asia) submit an amicus brief to the Court.
