O’Melveny Of Counsel Barton H. “Buzz” Thompson, Jr. Releases New Book About Freshwater Crisis
December 1, 2023
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SILICON VALLEY—December 01, 2023—Stanford University Press has announced the publication of a new book authored by O’Melveny Of Counsel Barton H. “Buzz” Thompson, Jr. entitled, Liquid Asset: How Business and Government Can Partner to Solve the Freshwater Crisis.
The book was released on November 21.
In Liquid Asset, Thompson discusses the private sector's critical involvement in meeting the water needs of both people and the environment, considers the obstacles that private companies face in trying to participate in the water sector, and explores how government might address the potential risks of growing private involvement given the historic public interest in water. As part of this examination, he chronicles how public/private water partnerships came to be and shows where they can lead. In the words of the Vice President of the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power Board, the book is an “engaging and well-written blueprint for harnessing private sector ingenuity and profit-motive in order to protect and preserve our most precious natural resource.”
Thompson serves as Of Counsel in O’Melveny’s acclaimed Water Group, which counsels clients on the full spectrum of legal services facing water investors and financiers, agricultural companies, major water users, and government agencies including high-stakes transactions, complex litigation, and regulatory issues. In his role as O’Melveny Of Counsel, Thompson helps lead the Water Group and advises clients in water law property and environmental matters. He also serves as a private arbitrator and special master.
Thompson’s book is inspired, in part, by a Business of Water class that he has taught at Stanford University for the past seven years alongside O’Melveny partner Matt Kline, who heads the O’Melveny Water Group.
In addition to his work at O’Melveny, Thompson is a Robert E. Paradise Professor of Natural Resources Law at Stanford Law School, Professor of Environmental Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, and a Senior Fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment. In addition to Liquid Asset, he has written and co-authored several books, including Environmental Law and Policy, 5th edition (2019).
