Firm’s attorneys honored for success in securities and environmental litigation in California
SAN FRANCISCO—March 6, 2020—O’Melveny & Myers LLP has taken five top honors in the latest Benchmark Litigation Awards, including being named both Securities and Environmental Litigation Law Firm of the Year for California. The awards were issued at Benchmark’s annual dinner in San Francisco on March 5.
At the same time, O’Melveny partners Seth Aronson and Matt Kline were named California Litigation Attorneys of the Year—Aronson for his work in securities cases and Kline for his work in environmental and natural resources matters.
O’Melveny also received Benchmark’s Legal Impact Case award, recognizing the firm’s groundbreaking victory in a water rights case in one of the nation’s agricultural heartlands, California’s Coachella Valley. In that case, Kline, head of O’Melveny’s Water Industry Practice, took over from another firm, with longtime water-management policies in the valley hanging in the balance. Relying on a traditional but little-used water rights doctrine, he guided the Coachella Valley Water Authority to victory. The win established an important distinction between water rights and legal standing to sue others drawing from the same source.
O’Melveny’s five Benchmark Litigation awards include:
- California Environmental/Natural Resources Litigation Firm of the Year
- California Securities Litigation Firm of the Year
- Matt Kline – California Environmental/Natural Resources Litigation Attorney of the Year
- Seth Aronson – California Securities Litigation Attorney of the Year
- Legal Impact Case – Coachella Valley Water District/Agua Caliente
The awards culminate a months-long research process during which Benchmark Litigation, a leading guide to firms and lawyers worldwide, extensively interviews litigators and their clients to identify outstanding cases and their practitioners.
“We’re proud to receive this acknowledgement of our litigation work in California, especially in the critical areas of securities and environmental disputes,” said Rich Goetz, Co-chair of O’Melveny’s Litigation Department. “It’s a testament to Matt and Seth and their teams that our firm earned this recognition—for the second year running, in some cases.”
