O’Melveny Supports University Campus Gun-Restriction Policy

O’Melveny joined with pro bono clients Brady and Team ENOUGH in drafting an amicus brief supporting the University of Michigan’s policy restricting guns on its campuses, which was pending before the Michigan Supreme Court. The 2021 amicus brief focused on the impact of guns on free speech rights within the campus/academic environment.

The case was remanded to the Michigan Court of Appeals in light of the 2022 US Supreme Court decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass'n, Inc v Bruen. O’Melveny is once again taking on this issue through an amicus brief, including a new client, the American Association of University Professors. The brief will address the intersection of First and Second Amendment rights and the importance of free speech and the free exchange of ideas on campuses.
