Maria C. Benites Gutierrez

Maria C. Benites Gutierrez represents and advises clients on complex financial restructurings and related litigation. Currently, she is part of the O’Melveny team assisting the Government of Puerto Rico to restructure its funded debt and pension obligations—marking the largest municipal restructuring in recent history.

Prior to joining O’Melveny, Maria was a senior corporate counsel at Copeinca-CFG, the fishing company owning the largest quota for the harvest of anchovy in Peru, where she assisted local legal management and the Trustee appointed by the Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York in corporate, financial and commercial matters. During this time, she also dealt with legal questions and tax issues involving hundreds of millions of dollars of debt and assets as part of this company’s operational endeavors.  

Maria has also worked for prestigious firms in Peru providing guidance concerning infrastructure projects and arbitration processes in connection therewith to multinational leading financial institutions and private companies.

  • Contributed to the O’Melveny team working on behalf of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in its municipal debt restructuring of US$70 billion of funded debt obligations and US$50 billion in pension obligations, the largest in US history.
  • Represented private equity firm Genstar Capital in its investment in insurance provider AmeriLife Group, LLC.
  • Represented CFG-Copeinca in several cross border deals which entailed, among others, debt financing transactions of all varieties and distressed acquisitions of businesses.
