O’Melveny Worldwide

Rui Li is a litigator in O’Melveny’s Intellectual Property and Technology practice group. Focusing on patent infringement and trade secrets cases, Rui has represented clients in US Federal Courts, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and the US International Trade Commission. With degrees in both physics and mechanical engineering, Rui has particular experience in matters involving complex technologies, including computer hardware, semiconductors, networking systems, medical devices, mobile applications, augmented reality, navigation technology, and financial technology.

  • Member of a winning trial team for a leading two-way radio company as complainant in an ITC Section 337 Investigation against a multi-billion dollar competitor, securing a limited exclusion order preventing the defendant from importing its infringing products into the US
  • Member of a winning trial team for an innovative computer vision company as plaintiff in a five-patent infringement trial against competitor, securing a jury verdict in favor of client on all counts, finding willful infringement and awarding $125 million in damages
  • Represented a global manufacturer of digital two-way radio technology as plaintiff in a trade secret misappropriation and copyright infringement suit against a major competitor; jury awarded $764 million in compensatory and punitive damages
  • Represented a leading semiconductor manufacturing company in IPR proceedings in connection with multi-jurisdictional patent infringement lawsuits, resulting in institution of IPR proceedings on all five challenged patents
  • Represented a global manufacturer of digital two-way radio technology in an inter partes review (IPR) and a patent invalidation proceeding in China against a major competitor, resulting in a denial of institution at the PTAB and a finding of patent validity in China
  • Represented a fin-tech startup company in a trade secrets misappropriation suit against prominent silicon valley investors and a major competitor
  • Defended a pharmaceutical company in a lawsuit alleging trade secret misappropriation and patent infringement
