Sean leverages his engineering background and combined business and legal experience in technology companies to provide strategic, practical counsel on complex commercial and technology transactions. His practice spans a broad range of technology and IP matters, including licensing arrangements involving patents, software, content, and data; commercial arrangements for supplying, distributing, and manufacturing products; and enterprise technology agreements, including SaaS subscriptions, master services agreements, and API licenses. Sean also regularly advises on strategic transactions, including asset sales, joint developments, and university or research institute licensing, and has extensive experience on IP and technology aspects of M&As, IPOs, venture financings and other high-stakes business deals.
Sean also works closely with startups and tech companies on open-source licensing issues, helping clients navigate compliance with open-source licenses, contribute to open-source projects, and develop strategies for integrating open-source software into their products.
Sean’s expertise spans a wide range of industries and emerging technologies, including AI/machine learning, blockchain and digital assets (such as NFTs), AR/VR, cloud computing, gaming, digital advertising, autonomous vehicles, cybersecurity, fintech, health tech, medical devices, semiconductor devices, IoT, consumer electronics, edtech, SaaS platforms, telecommunications, and data analytics.
A USPTO-registered patent attorney with both the CIPP/US and CIPP/E privacy certifications, Sean practiced at several leading law firms before joining O’Melveny. Prior to his legal career, he served as lead engineer at a global technology company.
