O’Melveny’s 2022 California CLE Marathon: Biases
January 11, 2022
Recognizing the impact of bias, even when it is unintentional, is key to creating inclusive environments and access to equitable treatment in our society. Our biases reflect how we internalize messages about our society rather than our intent. Nevertheless, we can still act on our biases in ways that can harm others. There is evidence of this in all walks of life including in the legal industry and the courtroom. During this program we will we define implicit bias, describe that various ways that it manifests, and consider how assumptions, micro aggressions, and bystander behavior play roles in identifying and addressing implicit bias. Finally, we will discuss how knowing yourself – through measuring your implicit bias, acknowledging your triggers or becoming aware of situations that are rife for implicit bias – is key to mitigating implicit bias.
